This pattern is very easy and quick to tat up. I've made these in size 10 crochet cotton for Easter or Christmas gift tie-ons.
clover: R 4-5-5-4, R 4j5-5-4, R 4j5-5-4
chain: 5-5 join to any hole of button 5-5
repeat clover
ch: 5j5 join to next hole in button 5-5-5-5
repeat clover
ch:5j5j5j5 join to next hole in button 5-5
repeat clover
chain: 5j5 join to last hole in button 5j5
tie into base of clover and finish off.
Adjusting the tension in the chains so that it "sits" right can be a bit tricky. I haven't found any perfect solution for that though...
I've also made this into a pendant (with a tiny mother-of-pearl button) - just attach a jumpring to the top picot, and run a ribbon through it to hang.
I saw this a few days ago and loved it... Today, I took a deep breath and made an attempt! It doesn't look very good, but you can tell it's a cross and I actually finished it, so I'm thrilled! LOL. This is the first time I've gotten beyond one clover or one flower! Thank you SO MUCH!!! I'm thinking that I may attach it to a bookmark/thong that I attached a single clover to at one end... Thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'll be able to do the suncatcher soon. LOL. More crosses first, it seems like a great thing to practice with, especially since I seem to have a problem with everything facing the same way... Having the button will hopefully help me be more conscious of which way a piece is facing! Thank you again!
ReplyDeleteHi Stephanie,
ReplyDeleteGreat job! If you got those joins down, that's really good.
Kira's heart and the Suncatcher are pretty nice for beginners - and that endless chain around the outside helps with practicing to get the chains to the same tension (which is my main problem!)
I made this one in the past,I really enjoyed it, plus I enjoy running accross your patterns and the comments that others have made while doing my internet searches.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand how to join it to the button holes.

Pull a loop of thread through from the back of the button through a button hole (using your shuttle hook or a small crochet hook), then run the shuttle through the loop, then pull the thread up snugly against the button. Continue tatting.
ReplyDeleteThis video has a pretty good demonstration (start around the six minute mark.)

Best regards, Aggie.
does anyone have a cheat sheet on abbreviations? I have looked but the 5-4 4-5 stuff is tripping me up. As you can tell I am VERY new to this. Is there a tutorial somewhere for this?
ReplyDelete- = picot (so 3-3-3 would mean three doublestitches, a picot, three doublestitches, a picot, three doublestitches
DeleteR - ring
Ch - chain
j - join
Thank u

ReplyDeleteHi Michael, generally you will turn the piece over every time you switch from a ring to a chain, or from a chain to a ring.
